Observe Humpback Whales on a Bora Bora Whale Watching Cruise!
Each year around June, humpback whales start their migration from Antarctica towards French Polynesia in search of waters rich in plankton and safe haven to give birth. During this time of the year, Reef Discovery ventures out of the lagoon to look for these beautiful giants!
Join one of our observatory excursions for a unique experience! We conduct our tours with the utmost respect for the wellbeing of these wild animals. Given the popularity of this tour, we recommend that you book in advance in order to guarantee your chosen date. Dates for the 2020 season are now available to book for the months of August to October.
You may have the opportunity to get in the water if weather conditions and animal behavior allow it to listen to the whale song (supervised by our guide). Given that the high seas require good swimming skills, we recommend a private tour for all people requiring special assistance in the water (beginner swimmers included).
- Pick-up and drop-off from given spots in Bora Bora

This tour heads out to the high seas, thus it is not recommended for children under 5 years old. However, if you feel like sharing this experience with your young ones, Reef Discovery can accommodate your group on a private tour. If in doubt, please contact us for more information.
Dates Can Change:
Whale migration dates are known to change from one year to another, and they have done so more dramatically these past few years due to climate change. The Reef Discovery team may contact you in the week leading up to your tour to discuss available options if the tour cannot proceed (transfer to another tour, date change, or refund).
What if I don’t see whales?
During the whale migration, it is highly likely you’ll encounter one specimen during your tour. As we travel in their natural habitat, we cannot, however, guarantee it. If no whale is seen in the first two hours of the tour, the captain can adapt the itinerary so that you can enjoy the other aspects of Bora Bora and its lagoon.
Our team takes great care in guaranteeing whale spotting by checking animal movements during the migration and will always endeavor to serve you in the best way possible. If your tour is confirmed and/or has started, no refunds are possible. Contact our friendly Reservation team for more information about our cancellation policy if in doubt.
